It's a typical start to the day, for Department of Defense agent Alison Blake, government liaison to Global Dynamics in Eureka, Oregon, population: thousands of people far too smart for their own good.

5:00 am: Wake up, half hour treadmill run, fifteen minutes tai-chi, shower.
6:00 am: Wake up Brian, get him dressed for tutors and make breakfast.
6:45 am: Drop Brian off, drive to the office.

Right on schedule.

Nope. Not happening. Why are women here so predictable?

"I'm waiting," Jack offers without even so much as a sip of his own coffee. Walking in between Jo and Alison past the café and the shops along Archimedes Way, Jack laughs at Alison's feigned "For what?"

"Oh, come on. You're a woman, you're makin' small talk, you're buying me coffee -- which means either A) you're into me, or B) you want something."

Alison never rolls her eyes.

Usually.

"Could you be more sexist?"

[eureka_npcs]

"Come clean, or I'll make my own assumptions."

[eureka_npcs]

Still nothing, except possibly stalling.

[eureka_npcs]

"Okay, Alison Blake?" Directed at a startled patron sitting at a table waiting for his food, "Totally into me. You -- " Another, trying to make her way to the bank, "Alison? So likes me --- "

Shut up!

"We -- we have a visitor in town," Alison finally says after smacking Jack in the arm to get him to be quiet.

"See, was that so hard?"

Jack can feel Jo mentally berating him behind his back, but Jack's grinning anyway.

Shut up, Jack. Shut up, Jack...SHERIFF CARTER, STOP BEING AN ASSHOLE! We're at work, for the love of...Womankind weeps. Wait...backtrack...Guest?

"We do?"

[eureka_npcs]

Thank you, Jo.

"Congressman Farraday, he got in last night."

[eureka_npcs]

"Hunh."

Arriving at the police station door, Jack hits upon the money question.

"And you're telling me this...why?"

[eureka_npcs]

"We're under budget review. Farraday's tour has to go smoothly, and Nathan would just like you to...keep a lid on things."

Jo escapes into the station as Alison adds, "He has great faith in your abilities."

[eureka_npcs]

"No he doesn't."

[eureka_npcs]

Agreeing quickly, "No he doesn't, but we could use a day or two of quiet."

[eureka_npcs]

Jack raises a very incredulous eyebrow.

"In this town? That's easier said than done -- "

[eureka_npcs]

"Sheriff -- "

Henry walks out of the station door, only a passing greeting to Alison.

" -- Something's happened to Spencer."

[eureka_npcs]

Already fleeing and tossed behind her shoulder: "I didn't hear that!"
